Dear Neil: I just moved into a house that has a tree in the front yard with a high mound of mulch up around its trunk. When I tried to scrape the mulch away, I found large tree roots 2-3 in. in diameter coming out from the trunk, then turning straight down into the soil. Do I have to leave it like that? I really don’t like the look.

We have just celebrated Memorial Day, which is an important holiday, honoring those that died in the service for our country. It began just after the American Civil War. In many communities, there are volunteers that place flags on the graves of all who died in service to our country, and in other communities, they are placed on all the veterans’ graves.

ANDRES MADRID The Midland College Williams Regional Technical Training Center (WRTTC) – Fort Stockton honored dual credit students from Fort Stockton High School and Buena Vista Independent School District during the 2026 Nurse Aide & Pharmacy Technician Pinning Ceremony held May 6 at the Fort Stockton Convention Center. The ceremony recognized students who completed Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) and Pharmacy Technician coursework while still enrolled in high school through Midland College dual credit workforce programs.

Downtown Fort Stockton is set to brighten, literally and figuratively, this weekend as the Fort Stockton Community Theatre and ChunkArts Studio join forces for a partnership that blends culinary arts, live drama, and luminous visual storytelling. Centered around the performances of a classic comedy “The Odd Couple”, the event serves as a platform for local artist Steven Walker to showcase his innovative illuminated collage works in a pop-up art show hosted at the FMH Meeting Hall.

On May 8, 2026, PermiaCare hosted a Mental Health Awareness Event at its Fort Stockton location to foster a supportive and welcoming space for the community. The event, held at 301 E. 5th Street, offered attendees a safe and judgment-free environment to connect with others and learn about vital mental health resources. The gathering featured free food and drinks, and it provided a unique opportunity for residents to talk directly with caring professionals. The event saw a high level of engagement, with organizers noting it was “Sold Out” shortly after its 10 AM start.
