Volume I: Chapter I, “Prehistoric Man in Pecos County” Pecos County has been described by various terms: to the archeologist it is the Northeastern Trans-Pecos, or the middle Pecos River Valley; to the botanist it is the Chihuahuan Biotic Province; to the geologist it is the Central Basin Platform of the Permian Basin; and to the historian Pecos County is the land “west of the Pecos.” Whatever its title Pecos County and adjacent areas east and west of the Pecos River were home to prehistoric man for thousands of years.Man entered the North American continent near the close of the Wisconsin Glaciation via a land bridge connecting Asia with Alaska more than 20,000 years ago. There are three recognizable archeological Complexes for Paleo man in the Southwest. In the Llano Complex man used a beautifully worked fluted flint point called the Clovis point which was lanceolate, or leaf-shaped.The subsistence base was the mammoth which became extinct. The climate during this period was Anathermal, or cooler and wetter than the weather is today.
