Panthers crowned champions of Comanche Relays

For the second consecutive year, the Fort Stockton boys track team earned a team title at the annual Comanche Relays on Feb. 26.

Fort Stockton finished 56 points ahead of runner-up Greenwood and 59 points ahead of third-place finisher Seminole.

Fabian Perez and Zane Hodges led the Panthers with a combined five top-two finishes.

Jackson showcases track potential at Comanche Relays

Fort Stockton sophomore Ali Jackson made her presence known on West Texas cross country courses this past fall, qualifying for state for the first time in Class 4A.

Now she is making her impact felt on the track.

The sophomore claimed gold medals in the 400-meter dash and the 800 at Saturday’s Comanche Relays, and earned a silver medal in the 200.

Top recruit puts on show

Lubbock Monterey star freshman Aaliyah Chavez, middle, put on a clinic at the Special Events Center in Fort Stockton on Feb. 18 against Chapin in the area round of the Class 5A playoffs. Chavez, who is one of 25 girls in the nation included in the HoopGurlz Recruiting Rankings – espnW Watch List, scored 37 points, including seven 3-pointers, in her team’s 80-58 victory. Chavez received her first scholarship offers as 14-year-old eighth grader a year ago from Texas Tech and Arkansas. Chavez is averaging 25.9 points per game this season on 51% shooting, topped by a season-high 50 points earlier this season. Photo by Nathan Heuer

Fort Stockton golf team takes 3rd at home tournament

The Fort Stockton golf team competed at their two-day home tournament on Friday and Saturday at Desert Pines Golf Course. Ejay Ortiz’s team-best score of 175 and Andrew Rangel’s closest-to-hole award highlighted the Panthers third-place finish as a team.
