COVID-19 cases reach all-time high in Pecos County

The current number of confirmed COVID-19 active cases and probable active cases reached an all-time high in Pecos County on Aug. 31.

The 74 current active confirmed cases tested in Fort Stockton and 17 probable active cases tested at Iraan General Hospital raise the total case number to 91 in the county – three higher than the previous record in Pecos County, which was 88 active cases on Dec. 29, 2020.

PCMH looks to combat staffing issues

With the recent significant COVID-19 spike, many hospitals are stretched thin — Pecos County Memorial Hospital (PCMH) is no different.

The PCMH Board discussed numerous items during their meeting on Aug. 17, including the lack of sufficient staff needed to treat COVID-19 and regular patients. Several department heads and medical staff members were welcomed to share their thoughts during the meeting.

City to replace water line

The Fort Stockton Economic Development Corporation approved the funding for commercial infrastructure improvements near downtown at the Aug. 19 meeting.

The city is set to replace the old cast iron water line that runs down Second Street from Nelson St to Main St, which is expected to cost $41,194.10, according to EDC Director Remie Ramos.

Fort Stockton native to retire from USPS

Rey Lopez will retire from the United States Postal Service on Friday, Aug. 27 after 31 years of service. “I love my job. My customers, I’ll miss them,” Lopez said. Lopez is a Fort Stockton native, graduating high school from Fort Stockton High School in 1972. Lopez will officially retire on Aug. 27 and has worked for the Fort Stockton office since 1993. St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church adds new service

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church announces that Father Michael Wallens will be celebrating Eucharistic services in Fort Stockton every Sunday at 5:00 p.m. A Bible Study, starting in September, will also be led by Father Wallens at 4:00 p.m. each Sunday for those who may be interested. The Bible Study and the worship service will take place in the sanctuary of the historic St. Stephen’s Church on Spring Drive across from Comanche Springs Swimming Pool.

COVID active cases continue steady rise

The number of confirmed active COVID-19 cases in Pecos County has seen a steady increase since July 28 and that trend has continued to get steeper in the past week. There were 30 new positive tests results reported since Aug.

Fort Stockton ISD Teachers of the Year

Andrea Johnson was presented the Teacher of the Year for the Intermediate School campus and was awarded and a $500 check by the Fort Stockton Lions Club. Search for Excellence in Education (SEED) Grant awards were handed out to the Teachers of the Year at each campus of the Fort Stockton Independent School District last week.

The 11 mobile food vendors that operate within Fort Stockton city limits currently and the customers who enjoy them had much reason to rejoice following the Fort Stockton City Council meeting on Aug. 24.
