Paul Casias took the reigns as mayor during a swearing-in ceremony Monday night, with a packed house of family and friends looking on. Casias was sworn in as mayor after winning the June 20 runoff election by 41 votes.

County updates outdoor lighting regulations

When Representatives from the McDonald Observatory approached the Pecos County Commissioner’s Court at its June 12 meeting asking for the county to update its outdoor lighting regulations to account for the advent of LED lighting, the court wasted no time. The court updated its regulations at the June 26 meeting to curb light pollution that might harm the observatory in its mission.

City amends public amusements ordinance

The Fort Stockton city council on June 26 rescinded an ordinance passed in January and passed a new ordinance imposing greater restrictions on coin-operated machines in game rooms inside the city. “We’re asking the council to enact a more comprehensive ordinance,” said assistant city manager Jesse Gonzales Jr.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick claimed last week that Gov. Greg Abbott is sabotaging the Senate’s work because of their ongoing feud over which approach to property tax reform is best, The Dallas Morning News reported. Abbott vetoed three bills by Sen. Paul Bettencourt, R-Houston, who has been Patrick’s point senator on increasing homestead exemptions in order to provide tax cuts. As of Friday afternoon, he had vetoed 31 bills.
