Belding Farms petitions Groundwater District to strengthen rules

Belding Farms, a pecan grower in Fort Stockton, filed a petition with the Middle Pecos Groundwater Conservation District (GCD) to strengthen rules intended to protect the Edwards-Trinity Aquifer that underlies Pecos County and feeds Comanche Springs. The petition asks the district to introduce a yearround threshold for the Edwards-Trinity Aquifer that would trigger cutbacks in groundwater pumping if aquifer water levels fall too low at any time and bolster the current winter recovery thresholds that are manipulable and overly complex.

Barrio Fest Education Day set for Sept. 15

The 2nd annual Barrio Fest, sponsored by the Fort Stockton Community Theatre will be Sept. 14-17. Third grade students from Alamo Elementary, Buena Vista School in Imperial and Fort Stockton Christian Academy along with their teachers and administrators will be part of the Education Day at Barrio Fest 2023 on Friday morning, Sept. 15, from 8:30–11:30. Students will be learning about the traditions of the Hispanic culture. There will be several community members who have volunteered their time to instruct the students about the rich culture that the Hispanic Community has to offer here in Fort Stockton. Students will be going 11 eleven stations as they learn about these traditions.

City quietly approves budget, tax rate

In a quick city council meeting on Monday evening, the Fort Stockton City Council approved the fiscal year 2023-24 budget and tax rate. The meeting was attended by city staff, media, and part of the time by one member of the public. Mayor Paul Casias was absent and Mayor pro tem James Warnock arrived late, so council member and former mayor Ruben Falcon opened the meeting.
