As the saying goes, revenge is a dish best served cold.
The Fort Stockton boys basketball team was defeated by Greenwood on the Rangers home floor on Jan. 14 by the score of 73-45. The Panthers were able to avenge that loss at the Special Events Center on Feb. 1, scoring a season-high point total in a 71-61 victory over the Rangers (17-7). The victory marked their first district win of the season.
The Fort Stockton freshman team claimed their fourth consecutive victory on Jan. 24 against Monahans, maintaining their perfect record against district competition on their home floor.
Christian Soto scored a game-high 12 points in Fort Stockton’s 51-38 victory over the Loboes. Evan Cordero contributed 10 points for the Panthers on Tuesday.
Fort Stockton freshman coach Richard Rojas credited his team’s defense for their success against Monahans.
Eliana Mata led a second quarter rally and Alyana Dominguez continued it after halftime, leading to a 24-24 tie with six minutes left in the third during Tuesday’s game against Monahans to begin the second round of district play.
From that point forward Monahans outscored the Prowlers 34-17 on their way to a 63-41 win.
Fort Stockton nearly snapped their six-game losing streak on the road against Pecos on Jan. 21, but a slow start hindered the Panthers once again during Friday’s district matchup.
The Eagles defeated Fort Stockton 60-54 after numerous rallies that came up short in the second half by the Panthers.
