Building committee releases property from demolish list

The Fort Stockton Substandard Building Committee was formed to ensure public safety by securing, repairing or removing local properties that are abandoned or deemed hazardous.

During their last regular meeting, the committee released a property that has been sitting on their list for years: 1206 W. Sheerer.

The property was condemned and close to being demolished when Fort Stockton electrician Jorge Leyva decided to swoop in and purchase it for a remodel.

An after look at 1206 W. Sheerer shows a decluttered carport, as renovation work has kicked off. The home was on the verge of demolition but has been saved by a willing resident who is giving the property a complete makeover.

New four-way stop coming to Seventh Street and Everts Street

After conducting a traffic study, the City of Fort Stockton is looking at adding a four-way stop to the intersection of Seventh Street and Everts Street.

The Fort Stockton City Council unanimously approved the intersection at its Sept. 14 meeting, following City Manager Frank Rodriguez’s recommendation, as Everts Street is considered to be a secondary route for residents who live in that area.

Seventh Street is also considered to be one of the only through streets in the area, according to the council, compared to Eighth and Ninth.

Fort Stockton Community Theatre announced that reservations for Dinner Theatre for its production of “Nunsense,” a musical written by Dan Goggin and directed by Penny Smith, will begin on Monday, Sept. 20. PCHC sets celebration at Horsehead Crossing

Pecos County Historical Commission (PCHC) president Paul Weatherby recently announced a two-day celebration at historic Horsehead Crossing on the Pecos River to be held Nov. 5-6. The event was first held in 2020 to commemorate the various historical figures who passed over this well-known crossing throughout the 16th-19th centuries, including the Comanche War Trail, the Emigrant Trail, the Butterfield Overland Stage, and the Goodnight-Loving Trail, which was made famous by Larry McMurtry’s Lonesome Dove.
