Strong pitching, defense lead to district-opening victory

Fort Stockton ace pitcher Alex Williams and the Panthers defense put forth one of their best performances of the season on March 23 in their district-opener at home against Greenwood.

Williams gave up only one hit and struck out eight while throwing over 100 pitches in five innings.

The Fort Stockton defense ensured the effort by Williams was rewarded, committing no errors in their 5-3 win over the Rangers.

Elpidio Salgado Baeza

Elpidio Salgado Baeza entered into rest on March 13, 2021. He was born on Dec. 26, 1945, to Manuel and Maria Baeza.

Elpidio worked for 23 years at the state highway department. He was an excellent heavy equipment operator, and he enjoyed fishing and his horses.

Elpidio was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel and Maria Baeza, and his brothers Eenemencio Baez and Cecilio Baeza.

Bernardo Guevara Leyva entered into rest on March 18, 2021. He was born on Aug. 20, 1969, to Guadalupe and Enedina Leyva.

Bernardo is survived by his parents Guadalupe and Enedina Leyva; wife Flavia Leyva; daughter Irassema Leyva and spouse Andreu Hernandez; brothers Reyes Leyva, Aniceto Leyva, Mayelo Leyva, Francisco Leyva, and Carlos Leyva; sisters Manuela Leyva, Lucila Leyva, Veronica Leyva, and Maria Magdelena Leyva.

A good cause: Richard Reeves Memorial Cook-Off returns at Rooney Park

Just two years ago the first Richard Reeves Memorial Cook-Off took place at Historic Fort grounds site in Fort Stockton. The event raised $9,300 for the memorial in 2019 with over 50 cookers and after a cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the cook-off is set to take place on Friday, March 19 and Saturday, March 20 at Rooney Park.

The Fort Stockton baseball team headed to the West Texas March Classic - a tournament that holds games at four different locations - for four contests last week Fort Stockton tallied a 1-2-1 record after playing a pair of games in Greenwood on Thursday, a contest in Midland, and in Odessa to close their play over the weekend. Fort Stockton picked up their lone victory against a familiar foe in Lake View.

Peters selected for prestigious award

Fort Stockton Athletic Director and head football coach Mike Peters was selected as the 2021 Region IV Athletic Director of the Year this past week. Peters is one of eight athletic directors in the state that were selected as AD’s from their specific region.

Four earn all-district honors

Lifters garner bronze medals

Kendrick Porras and Jaylee Ibarra had strong showings at the regional finals powerlifting meet in Sundown on Saturday. Ibarra and Porras each finished third in their respective weight class to lead the Panthers.

Prowlers suffer loss in district-opener

The Fort Stockton softball team began district play at Monahans on Tuesday, March 16 with a 27-1 defeat Despite a strong start, a string of errors gave the Lady Loboes the momentum they needed. The Prolwers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning via a Shelby Murphy single.

Panthers JV baseball avenge loss

The Fort Stockton junior varsity white Panther baseball team traveled to Pecos on Tuesday, March 16 to take on the Eagles. The Panthers were able to avenge their loss from a couple weekends ago against the Eagles, and came out on top this time with a 12-7 victory.
