Entities to split recreational facility study costs

The Pecos County Commissioners decided to move forward with a $7,000 contribution towards the study of future plans for the new Fort Stockton recreational facility at Monday’s regular meeting. The dollar amount was decided upon between the city, county, and school district at this past month’s recreation board meeting.

Approval of salary and compensation plans moving forward for district employees will be decided at the Fort Stockton ISD School Board Meeting on Monday, June 28 at 7 p.m.

The board will also consider approval of a fuel station bid package, which was previously discussed at last month’s board meeting. The project could top out at near a $1 million.

Hot dog luncheon set

The Pecos County Senior Center will host its annual Independence Day hot dog lunch and patriotic sing-along on Friday, July 2, at noon at the Senior Center. Hot dogs and cold tea will be provided to all attendees, followed by patriotic songs. The lunch is free to all Pecos County Senior Center members. This year’s lunch is continued after being cancelled the past year because of COVID restrictions. To attend contact the Senior Center Director Maria Gilbert at 432-336-2302 so she may have enough food and drink. Membership in the Center is open to any Pecos County citizen age 50 and older, with dues at $5 a year. Those who have an older relative or friend who is a Senior Center member can also participate. The sing-along will follow the lunch, and will include many favorites, like “God Bless America” and “You’re A Grand Old Flag.” The Pecos County Senior Center is located at 1010 West 14th Street in Fort Stockton. It hosts activities all year long, and provides a cool place with free water and coffee during the day.

Library kicks off reading program

On June 21 Imperial Public Library kicked off its summer 2021 reading program with a Magical Balloon Show featuring Robb Holladay and his Man-Eating Balloon performance. The show took place in the new community building in Imperial. Finger foods and drinks were provided by library staff and volunteers.

Illegals apprehended

Late on June 21 Brewster County deputies conducted a traffic stop on an RV near the Big Bend National Park entrance on Texas Highway 118 south of Study Butte. The vehicle was occupied by 49 illegal aliens from Brazil, Ecuador, and Mexico, along with two U.S. citizens, including the driver.

Variance allowed for business

The Fort Stockton City Council met in regular session on June 22, and heard presentations from Texas New Mexico Power and the Recreation Department, and discussed several ordinance and infrastructure changes.
Pictured is the building at 123 N. Main St., which received approval for an alcohol permit at Tuesday's city council meeting. The business, which is yet to be in operation, is owned Albert Valadez.

Hiring authority regained by superintendent

When the Fort Stockton Independent School District School Board narrowed its search to a final list of candidates for interviews this past May for the superintendent job, the group decided to take away the final hiring authority for contract personnel from the head of the school district for a potential conflict of interest.
