The Fort Stockton Substandard Building Committee was formed to ensure public safety by securing, repairing or removing local properties that are abandoned or deemed hazardous.

During their last regular meeting, the committee released a property that has been sitting on their list for years: 1206 W. Sheerer.

The property was condemned and close to being demolished when Fort Stockton electrician Jorge Leyva decided to swoop in and purchase it for a remodel.

A once unsightly carport is now cleared after years of being packed with trash and debris. The recent and evident progress of restoration is what led the committee to finally release the property from their list.

Leyva is still working on the renovation, which began with removing all the abandoned trash and bulk items, both inside and outside of the home. What was once an eye sore is now being transformed into a home that will compliment the neighborhood.

The success story of 1206 W. Sheerer is one of many reviewed by the Substandard Building Committee. Instead of neglected buildings being torn down, the committee puts full efforts to seeing every property be brought to compliance, if feasible.
