CPAR set to hold fundraising event for animals in need

Animals have always been close to the heart for Fort Stockton residents Nicole Bennett and Dennis Gross. And in the past year and a half, the two have teamed together, along with fellow Fort Stockton resident Heather Pass, to save animals thousands of animals lives in the Fort Stockton area.

Fort Stockton native Calistra Acosta Valenzuela will hit a significant milestone in her life on April 22. The Fort Stockton High School graduate, who was born in Fort Stockton on April 22, 1921 to Lazaro Acosta and Miquela Salmon Acosta, will turn 100-years-old.

In an effort to retain employees and for superior performances throughout the unprecedented pandemic this past year, Fort Stockton City Council approved a one-time stiped of $1,200 for full-time city employees on April 13 at the council’s regular meeting.

Pickup available for county clean-up

This month’s county cleanup will provide a pickup service free of charge after a decision made by the county commissioners at Monday’s regular meeting. The county will be picking up trash, bulk items such as appliances and mattresses, as well as trash, curbside at county resident homes in the next two weeks.

Fort Stockton Community Theatre hosted Karaoke Night on April 10. Pictured is Oralia Hall, who placed first, and Daniel Frank, who took second. The event took place fort the first time in two years after it was cancelled due to the pandemic a year ago. Karaoke Night originally started at the venue in October of 2016.

COVID-19 cases have reached an all-time low since the start of the pandemic in Pecos County. For the past six days, there have been zero active COVID-19 cases in the county and that number has stayed in single digits since March 9 and below 20 active cases since Feb.

What the Clovis Man was like in Pecos County

Having just celebrated the Easter holiday, it may be hard to comprehend that 10,000 years before the birth of Jesus Christ, there was a community of hunter-gatherers living out here in Pecos County. They were known as Clovis Man because of the distinctive flint projectiles they produced, and their ability to hunt animals living here at the time.

Karaoke night is back

Karaoke night is back at Fort Stockton Community Theatre at 102 South Nelson on Saturday, April 10. Doors will open at 7 p.m., with competition starting at 7:30 p.m. to crown the newest karaoke king or queen. Admission is $10 per person. Bring dollars to vote for a favorite performer.

The COVID-19 virus kept the Fort Stockton Water Carnival from having the 2020 show last summer, but the show and pageants for all ages will be held this summer. The third week in July is known by many as Water Carnival week, and this summer will be no different. Kaitlynn Pacheco and Dalila Lara will direct this year’s show, “How NOT to Propose in Vegas.” Sign-up for swimming and dance acts will be held at the prop room on May 2 from 1-4 p.m., and May 16 from 1-4 p.m. Be part of Fort Stockton’s largest long-time tradition.
