No injuries in Friday morning house fire

Fort Stockton Fire and police responded to a structure fire at Fourth Street and Texas Street near the Fort Stockton Christian Academy on Friday, Nov. 4.

Fort Stockton Fire Chief Jessie Dominguez said 15 firefighters helped put the fire out and that the person inside the home was treated for minor smoke inhalation but was not otherwise hurt. The cause of the fire was still under investigation as of Tuesday afternoon

Capital Highlights: Panic buttons, locked doors for Texas schools

Texas public schools would have to install panic buttons in classrooms and ensure all doors and windows are locked and monitored under new proposed safety standards released last week by the Texas Education Agency.

The proposal is the latest effort to strengthen school safety after 19 children and two teachers were killed at Robb Elementary in Uvalde last May in the state’s deadliest school shooting.

FSCT to host Story to Health Workshop

A free Story to Health workshop will be held on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 1-3 p.m. at the FMH Meeting Hall of Fort Stockton Community Theatre. Peoples’ stories are a powerful influence on life choices. Sharing personal stories is a way to improve wellness. The theme of the event will be built around experiences of gratitude, as gratitude is a powerful influencer of health backed by tradition and science. The Story to Health workshop will be facilitated by Dijo John, Senior Director of the Rural and Community Engagement Division of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center- Permian Basin. His division manages the Medicine on the Move program – a mobile health initiative to engage communities for better health. Dijo has graduatelevel training in pharmacy, public health, and management.

PCMH Health Fair set for Nov. 5

Pecos County Memorial Hospital’s “Fall into Better Health” Fair 2022 takes place Saturday, Nov. 5 from 9 a.m.-Noon at the Fort Stockton Convention Center. Flu shots will be available for $30 (cash or check only). There is no charge for those who present a Medicare card. Free health screenings and free education programs will be available, as well as door prizes.

Taco Bell and KFC on track for December openings

When the combined KFC and Taco Bell burned down in October 2020, Fort Stockton lost two favorite fast-food options. The lot has now been vacant for over two years and speculation was rampant about whether the restaurants would return or something new would take its place.
Construction of the new KFC and Taco Bell restaurants are progressing. The joint restaurant burned down in October 2020 and construction of two separate buildings broke ground last August. The restaurants are expected to be open by December. Photo by Shawn Yorks
