City plans Veterans Day activities

Fort Stockton will join the rest of America in honoring our nation’s veterans on Nov. 11 with several activities. American Legion Post 234 will play host to its Annual Veterans Breakfast at 7 a.m. at Rooney Park’s Large Community Hall. The Legion invites all local and visiting veterans to the breakfast.

Lancium’s Fort Stockton Facility Qualifies as ERCOT Controllable Load Resource

Lancium, Inc., an energy technology and infrastructure company that advances the decarbonization and stability of the electric power grid, today announced the company’s Fort Stockton, Texas Clean Campus has been qualified as a “Controllable Load Resource” (CLR) by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). As a CLR, large power users can reduce their energy costs by dynamically avoiding periods of high prices while simultaneously providing highly desired grid stability services.

Senior Citizens Center to host Thanksgiving Potluck Nov. 4

The Pecos County Senior Citizens Center will host its Thanksgiving Potluck dinner this Friday, Nov. 4, at noon at the Senior Citizens Center, located at 1010 W. 14th St. in Fort Stockton.

Turkey and sides will be provided and all attendees are asked to bring a side dish or a dessert.

The Senior Citizens Center is open to all Pecos County residents 50 and older, with dues running only $5 per year. New members are welcome to attend the dinner this Friday and sign up at the potluck.

Capital Highlights: Early voting ends Friday; election is Tuesday, Nov. 8

Early voting for the general election ends on Friday, Nov. 4, with the closely watched governor’s race pitting incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott against challenger Beto O’ Rourke headlining the ballot. A number of other statewide races are on the ballot, including lieutenant governor, attorney general, land commissioner, agriculture commissioner and comptroller.

Community a no-show at Home Rule Charter town hall meeting

Early voting is under way for the Nov. 8 general election, and one item on the ballot for voters who reside within the Fort Stockton city limits is whether the city should adopt a home rule charter. A Home Rule Charter takes some power away from the state and gives city residents more of an opportunity to govern themselves.

Fort Stockton is the largest city in Texas that has not yet adopted a home-rule charter.

County approves bids for facility repairs in Precinct 4, tables action on another

Pecos County recently requested proposals from local contractors for repairs to county facilities in Coyanosa and Imperial, the bids were unsealed at the Oct. 24 Pecos County Commissioner’s Court meeting in Fort Stockton. One bid – for low-water crowing repairs on Tipton Road – was approved, but the bids from Triple R Welding of Fort Stockton and Basin Roofing and Construction of Midland to repair the Imperial Fire Station, the Old Community Building in Coyanosa and the Imperial Boy Scout/sheriff’s building were tabled pending warranty information.

Alonzo Jose Rodriguez, of Fort Stockton, at 10:02 a.m., officers from the Pecos County Sheriff’s Office apprehended Rodriguez on a failure to appear warrant for assault causes bodily injury family violence. Rodriguez received a $1,000 bond and is still in jail.

“Coco” and “Dracula” to be shown at FSCT

Fort Stockton Community Theatre and Fort Stockton Film Society are joining forces toshow two films through Halloween weekend at The Nelson Street Theatre, 102 South Nelson. Disney’s animated film “Coco” will be shown Saturday afternoon, Oct. 29, at 2:00 p.m. and again Sunday afternoon, Oct. 30, at 4:00 p.m. Coco celebrates the Mexican holiday “Day of the Dead,” which is on Nov. 1. The doors will open thirty minutes before the movie is to begin. There is no charge for admission, but donations will be welcomed to help defray the licensing fee for the film. On Monday, Oct. 31, at 7:00 p.m. the 1931 Spanish-language version of “Dracula” willbe shown. Again, the doors will open thirty minutes prior to the show. There will be no admission fee, but donations will be welcomed. The Spanish version of Dracula was released inHavana, Cuba in March 1931 and in New York City in April of that same year. In 2015, Dracula was selected for the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. Make plans to attend showings of some of Hollywood’s Halloween classics at The Nelson Street Theatre on Oct. 29-31.

Fall clean-up starts Monday

Fort Stockton residents paying for city sanitation services will soon be able to get rid of select bulk items free of charge starting next week. The City of Fort Stockton will begin their annual Fall Clean-up on Monday, Oct. 31 and provide curbside pickup services. The community clean-up event will end on Thursday, Nov. 10.
