Voter turnout in the midterm elections again dropped statewide, with just over 45% of registered voters either casting ballots early or at the polls on Nov. 8. Republican candidates continued to hold a hammerlock on statewide positions, with incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott handily winning a third term over challenger Beto O’ Rourke.
Nov. 4
Ziad Gamal Khatab, of Houston at 12:19 p.m., officers from the Department of Public Safety apprehended Khatab and he was charged with possession of marijuana less than two ounces.
Nov. 5
Five local seats were up for grabs in Pecos County during the Nov. 8 Midterm Election and of those races, three incumbents were reelected.
Pecos County Judge Joe Shuster will serve his sixth four-year term as Pecos County Judge after defeating Republican Bryon Garrison by 879 votes (2,301-1,422).
“I appreciate the continued support,” Shuster said on Wednesday. “We need to continue to work together for Pecos County.”
Voter turnover more than doubled for the Nov. 8 election compared to the election held this past May.
The Fort Stockton ISD bond election drew over 1,800 additional votes and the results proved to be just as significant.
Proposition A, which is capped at $84 million, had 57% of votes in favor (1,803) and 43% against (1,320).
The result was a notable difference from this past May.
High demand for career technology programs at high schools nationwide reached Fort Stockton and the program was reborn and has received a high-tech boost, starting with the cosmetology program. The Cosmetology Program at Fort Stockton High School recently received some upgrades that will help the students learn in the best environment possible. The new cosmetology area is now officially inspected and licensed for use.
Fort Stockton Fire and police responded to a structure fire at Fourth Street and Texas Street near the Fort Stockton Christian Academy on Friday, Nov. 4.
Fort Stockton Fire Chief Jessie Dominguez said 15 firefighters helped put the fire out and that the person inside the home was treated for minor smoke inhalation but was not otherwise hurt. The cause of the fire was still under investigation as of Tuesday afternoon

Texas public schools would have to install panic buttons in classrooms and ensure all doors and windows are locked and monitored under new proposed safety standards released last week by the Texas Education Agency.
The proposal is the latest effort to strengthen school safety after 19 children and two teachers were killed at Robb Elementary in Uvalde last May in the state’s deadliest school shooting.
