County approves interlocal agreement

The Pecos County Commissioner’s Court on Dec. 27 renewed the property, casualty and auto insurance for its more than $214 million in property values. It includes flood and earthquake insurance, and the insurance company the county uses has between $5 million and $7 million reserved for the claims from the Oct. 10 hail storm which did extensive damage across Pecos County. The county will soon receive a breakdown on all the damaged buildings in regards to what’s paid and not paid.

City allows angled parking on Oklahoma Street

The area of Fort Stockton Intermediate School and the First Presbyterian Church could be a parking headache, especially at the beginning and end of the school day. There were no lines to mark parking spaces at the Presbyterian Church, and parents used the area in front of the church when picking up or dropping off their kids at the intermediate school.

Special exception allowed for mobile home in city limits

The Fort Stockton City Council on Dec. 12 granted a special exception to Obed Torres, allowing him to place a mobile home on property at 701 W. Sherer. Torres has already spent more than $200,000 on the project, which is zoned as a One Family Dwelling District, SF-3.

Capital Highlights: Most Texas pregnancy deaths preventable

A long-awaited state report concludes most pregnancy-related deaths in Texas in 2019 were preventable and disproportionately affected Black women.

The report, issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services and the Texas Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Committee, indicated deaths were mainly attributable to hemorrhage, mental health conditions and blood clots. Also playing a role were discrimination and violence, according to a Dallas Morning News analysis of the report.

Pecos County’s expansive landscape requires extensive measures when it comes to game management, and the Pecos County Commissioner’s Court on Dec. 12 awarded a bid to hunt down and manage game and nuisance animals across the county through the United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services.

Pecos County Memorial Hospital will soon begin its transition to a hospital district after a significant majority of county voters decided to approve the change during the Dec. 10 special election.
