Velasquez appointed interim Fort Stockton police chief

The City of Fort Stockton announced on Tuesday that Ernesto “Net” Velasquez has been selected as the Interim Police Chief for the Fort Stockton Police Department with the effective date of Jan. 10, 2023.

Velasquez began his tenure with the Fort Stockton Police Department as an assistant chief on Nov. 18, 2019 following service in the United States Army and as a Texas State Trooper.

Two years ago local longtime attorney Albert Valadez envisioned developing a unique venue and bar in Fort Stockton that would be enjoyable for a multitude of age groups. That vision became a reality on New Year’s Eve as hundreds of guests attended the opening of the Centennial Bar & Lounge, located at 123 N.

The Spirit of Giving: Fort Stockton teacher organizes toy drive for children in Mexico border town

When Collette Barragan learned of a “Santa Run” that took Christmas gifts to children in Boquillas Del Carmen, Mexico, she always wanted to participate. Long before she came to Fort Stockton, Barragan often visited Boquillas – a Mexican border town adjacent to Big Bend National Park accessible only by boat – and when she learned of the Santa Run, she was unable to participate because her children were too young.

New Taco Bell reopens in Fort Stockton Dec. 29

The newly built Taco Bell in Fort Stockton held a ribbon cutting today with the chamber of commerce. Taco Bell will open at 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 29

Initial business hours will be from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. General Manager Juan Rios said that they plan to potentially expand business hours in the future.

Taco Bell will add digital menu boards by the end of January due to supply chain issues.

The neighboring KFC is estimated to be open by Jan. 9 according to management.

Capital Highlights: Winter storm called ‘once in a generation’

An arctic storm that swept through the state bringing low temperatures and high winds also affected roughly two-thirds of the country’s population, according to the National Weather Service, bringing the coldest Christmas in decades to parts of the country.

The Dallas Morning News reported around 190 million people across the United States were under some type of winter weather advisory starting last Thursday.
