School Board honors Students of the month, renames middle school gym

The Fort Stockton Middle School gym will soon have a new name, born from tragedy but memorializing a studentathlete whose name will forever be remembered. The Fort Stockton Independent School District Board of Trustees on Monday night voted unanimously to name the middle school gym in memory of Donavyn Vaughn, an eighth grader who passed away in 2020 and who would have been a senior this school year.

County tables bid approval for EMS additions

Repairs and a remodel of the Pecos County EMS building will take a bit longer after the Pecos County Commissioner’s Court tabled action on the lone bid received during Monday morning’s 30-minute-long commissioner’s meeting. The only bid received and opened Oct. 12 was from OPREX Construction of Lubbock for a $2.6 million base bid, an alternate bid of $98,500 was received for air conditioning in the ambulance bays.

City hears police, street department updates

The Fort Stockton City Council heard presentations from city staff at its Oct. 10 meeting, including an update from police chief Ernesto Valasquez and public works director Luis Guerra. Guerra updated the council on the progress of various paving projects across Fort Stockton.

“We paved 676,296 square feet,” Guerra said. “Materials used was the equivalent of 6.7 miles. We used 1,696 tons of aggregate, 34,012 gallons of paving oil, 1,862 tons of base material.”
