SRSU nursing students receive equipment donation

The Sul Ross State University Department of Nursing was provided with lab equipment worth more than $2,700 from the Permian Basin Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Intravenous start kits, tourniquets, syringes, needles, tubing and simulated medication dosages were among the equipment. The PBAHEC representative also explained that several scholarships are available to Sul Ross’ nursing students. The center, funded through the Health Resources and Services Administration and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, serves 27 counties in West Texas.

Daniels earns Lonestar FFA Degree

The Fort Stockton FFA recognized Hunter Daniels for passing the state degree check and earning the Lone Star Degree. Hunter will have the opportunity to receive his Lone Star Degree on stage at the 95th Texas State Convention. The State/Lone Star FFA Degree is the highest degree of membership the State FFA Association can award. To receive a State FFA Degree, members must meet the following requirements:

Senior center offers Zumba classes

The Pecos County Senior Center is also offering Zumba classes on the first Tuesday of each month at 1:30 p.m. However, because the Fourth of July falls on the first Tuesday of July, for this month only it will be held on the second Tuesday. Leticia Gaylor leads the Zumba Chair Gold classes which are specially tailored for senior citizens as seated exercises.

Ignite gardens with a Texas Superstar – the firecracker plant

Homeowners looking to add a touch of fiery brilliance to their garden should look no further than the firecracker plant, named the newest Texas Superstar. The firecracker plant comes from the vibrant landscapes of Mexico and Guatemala, said Greg Grant, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service horticulturist, Smith County, and Texas Superstar executive board member.

During the summer, people tend to spend more time outdoors for longer periods of time, which can lead to a higher risk of a heat-related illness, such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke. The American College of Emergency Physicians reports that each year there are hundreds of fatalities and countless emergency department visits due to heat-related illnesses.

Restored Baermann mural to be on display this weekend

A mural by the mysterious artist Clifton Baermann has found a new home in the Emmett and Miriam McCoy Building, which opens to the public Saturday, June 24, at the Museum of the Big Bend in Alpine. The oil on canvas is quite large – 82 inches high by 270 inches wide – and covers the entire southern facing wall just outside of the events center, which is housed inside the new building on the campus of Sul Ross State University.
