Your Vote Counts

Body
One of the neatest things the founders and crafters of our county did was design our government to be for and by the people. That means we have a say in who our leaders will be. Very shortly we will be faced again with the decision of which candidates or party to vote for. We should not vote for someone just because of their popularity, financial status, good looks or race. Christians should carefully pray and even fast for God’s will to be done, (Philippians 4:6&7, 1 Peter 3:12). Also, God would raise up good leaders and give us insight into which one we should vote for, (Acts 13:2&3, 14:23, Luke 6:12&13). A question we could ask is who will or most likely protect or support Christian values? We do not want the government in the Church or the Church in the government. But we do need freedom of religion. That does not mean it will be forced on others, but we have the freedom to worship the God of our choice or to have no God at all. I cannot wait to vote not because of the candidates but because it is our privilege and freedom that our forefathers fought and died for. I would encourage all to go vote! Remember Christians are to pray for our leaders whether we approve of them or not, (1 Timothy 2:1-3).

The Battle Ground

Body
As we prepare for tomorrows battles, we all should be praying for better and desiring to see more of God and His plan. We keep praying for a big move from God, and then make the choices not go to church, to prayer night nor bible study. In other words we do not want to get involved with what is needed. In 2 chronicles 7:14 God says “if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves, pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” As Christians we all should be seeking and praying for revival and awakening. We should be ready and willing to get up and do, go out and seek the lost and the many in our nation who need to return to Jesus Christ. We want a better tomorrow; we must devote our hearts and ways of life to God and be filled with His Holy Spirit. May the awakening begin with you!

Take My Hand

Body
When I was lost and going in the wrong direction, you reached out your hand to me. When I rejected your love and help, you still walked beside me and loved me. You held me in your arms every day and every night. I had strayed from your path, yet you kept me safe from harm. You reached out to me as I was on my knees overwhelmed by pain. You stretched out your hand towards me and I took yours, you picked me up and held me. Letting me know that you never left my side. (Deuteronomy 31:8)

Archives of the Big Bend receives TSLAC grant to digitize Harry Warren collection

Body
A TexTreasures grant from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) will help to digitize the entire Harry Warren Papers collection beginning this fall at the Archives of the Big Bend at Sul Ross State University in Alpine. The collection is expected to be freely available to the public by Fall 2025. The Harry Warren Papers consist of journals, correspondence, scrapbooks, biographical and historical materials, financial records, literary manuscripts, and published monographs by Warren (1859-1931), a historian, author, teacher, farmer, customs official and attorney. Warren took extensive notes of his travels, documented major events, and collected several first-hand accounts from people in our region who were traditionally silenced or ignored, including Mexicans, Mexican Americans and Native Americans. His journals (1891-1926) include accounts of several Texas borderland raids during the Mexican Revolution, as well as the only known contemporary account of the Porvenir Massacre. As such, they are consistently used and cited by researchers and students of Texas history, Mexican American history, borderland history and military history throughout the state and region. Interest in said journals has significantly increased since the 2022 archaeological excavation of the Porvenir Massacre site, which found U.S. Army ammunition fired from military-issued weapons alongside the Texas Ranger and civilian ammunition. The Warren collection is now one of the Archives’ most requested and widely used manuscript collections. While some of these requests have been from Sul Ross students and area researchers, most are from visitors, journalists and researchers from outside of West Texas, with some requests coming from as far as the United Kingdom. The primary purpose for this digitization project is to improve accessibility to Harry Warren’s journals for researchers.

Mysterious Old Man Maladies

Body
I recently listened to actor Stanley Tucci being interviewed about getting older, and he shared some words of wisdom. (No, he didn’t suggest that older people should spend more time grooming their ear and nose hair – even though we should.) He said that we shouldn’t let aging consume us because there is so much for us to see and do. Or, in my case, there is so much more Tex-Mex to eat.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Body
On September the third I went to the city to have my dumpster which they called a trash bin picked up. Due to the fact that I couldn’t afford the extra $36.00 a month at this time due to the prescriptions I had to buy out of pocket. After I had signed what I thought was to have my trash bin picked up a day or two later the city brings me another trash bin. So, I called them about it and was told that they didn’t know what happened but would get them both picked up. Finally, they were picked up on October 24th.
