Statement win: Panthers shutout Eagles

Returning to his alma mater couldn’t have gone much better for Panthers head football coach Mike Peters on Friday.

The sixth-year head coach of Fort Stockton notched his first win against Pecos on the Eagles home field two years ago and after a loss to the Pecos in 2020, the Panthers left no doubt that they were the better program this season.

Panthers tight end Cruz Rojas stiff arms Pecos’ Jonathan Sandoval after a reception in the first half of Friday’s game. Rojas had two receptions for 19 yards in the win.

The large number of expulsions during the pandemic has contributed to a larger than usual number of migrants making multiple border crossing attempts, which means total encounters somewhat overstate the number of unique individuals arriving at the border. 

The number of unique encounters in August was 156,641.

Fort Stockton Community Theatre hosts storytelling workshop

They say that every story has a beginning, and for 23 young people from Pecos County, it all started on Sept. 18 at the Fort Stockton Community Theatre’s Storytelling Workshop.

Master Storyteller Sue Roseberry from Midland was on hand for the day-long workshop to teach the art of storytelling and help the participants feel comfortable in front of an audience. Ms. Roseberry was helped by FSCT coaches Ruben Gonzales, Ann Hurt, Jordan Rychlik, and Molly Yeager.

Praise for chili cook-off at public hearing

There was standing room only on Sept. 9 as business owners and residents filed into the Terlingua Fire and Emergency Management Services center for a public hearing on mass gathering permits. 

The permits were for the Chili Appreciation Society International and Tolbert chili cook-offs that take place the first week of November each year in Terlingua. Commissioners will vote on the matter at the Sept. 22 commissioners court meeting.

Chili cooks, residents, and business owners were among the 30 attendees at the public hearing for mass gathering permits in Terlingua on Sept. 9.

Armed robbery attempted in Fort Stockton

An attempted armed robbery occurred at Sandy’s Lounge in Fort Stockton on Saturday evening according to the Pecos County Sheriff’s Office.

No one was hurt and no money was taken during the incident, which happened shortly after 9 p.m.

Law enforcement reported that a male driving a red truck was able to get away before authorities arrived at the scene.

No one had been arrested for the incident as of Sept. 21.

Fort Stockton teen charged with murder

A Fort Stockton teen has been arrested and charged with murder of a local man 13 days after the incident occurred in the city. Andrew Pacheco, 18, was originally arrested the day of Edward Ramirez’s death on Sept.
