Comanche Springs Pool opens

The Comanche Springs Pool opened to the public for the first time this year at noon on May 24. The opening was five days earlier than a year ago.
Over 100 people attended the opening of the Comanche Springs Pool this past Tuesday in Fort Stockton. The temperatures peaked in the high 80s and low 90s during the afternoon. The opening of the pool comes before a scorching two-week stretch that is currently projected to have high temperatures of no lower of 90 degrees and six days that reach at least 99. Cowboys return to Kokernot next week

As the boys of summer roll back into Alpine, the lights will shine extra bright at Kokernot Field this year. The 2022 season marks the 75th anniversary of the o6 Cowboys in Alpine. General Manager Krisitn Cavness said, “This year is very special for not only the team, but also those who love the field and the game. We are really excited about this year’s group of athletes.” The ballpark was built in 1947 by H.L. Kokernot, Jr., as a new home for the baseball team. An estimated 6,000 attended a 1951 exhibition featuring Satchel Paige’s St. Louis Browns versus the Chicago White Sox. The history of the field means a lot to many, as it has seen many games, events, and more.

Sanchez ends stellar career with silver, bronze medals

Buena Vista cross country and track standout Mariana Sanchez left it all on the track in her final showing in a Longhorns uniform on May 14 at the UIL State Track & Field Championships in Class 1A.

The senior earned a silver medal in the 3,200-meter run and a bronze medal in the 1,600 with significant time improvements in each race.

Pioneer Athlete of the Week: Alyana Dominguez

Body
Dominguez ended her athletic career as a Prowler with an impressive showing at the plate and on the mound against Pampa in the area playoffs last week. The threesport star tallied a team-best six RBIs on five hits over the course of three games against the Harvesters. On the mound, Dominguez pitched in two of the three games and tallied a team-low 2.73 ERA.

A trio of Fort Stockton high school students were honored as Texas Music Scholars at a ceremony on April 29. Junior Fernado Corrales (cornet/trumpet), sophomore Aubrey Mendoza (flute), and junior Krystian Rodriguez (alto saxophone) earned the prestigious honor.

The Fort Stockton Middle School golf team hosted their home tourney at Desert Pines Golf Course on April 30. Rylee Muniz led the Panthers by placing sixth in the boy’s division and Paige Boon placed ninth in the girl’s division.
