The Fort Stockton football team lined up against an opponent for the first time under new head coach Jeremy Hickman in their opening scrimmage of the season on Aug. 12 in San Angelo against former district foe Lake View. In 2021, the Panthers secured an overtime win against the Chiefs and on Friday, the practice between the two teams proved to be similarly competitive.

Fort Stockton was able to accomplish what 40 of Wink’s 47 opponents could not a season ago – take a set from the defending Class 2A state semifinalists.

Prowlers poised for progression

Body

The Fort Stockton volleyball program broke through the proverbial district barrier a season ago under first-year head coach Gabrielle Harral, winning district contests for the first time in five years.

Now the bar moves a notch higher heading into year two of the Harral era.

“The girls kind of know who I am now and it’ll get them to buy into how I run the program,” Harral explained. “I’m so excited for this year because they know what I expect.”

Eliana Mata took on hitter and setter roles in a dual capacity for the first time in her career a season ago. The senior will look to lead the Prowlers to the playoffs for the first time in six years this upcoming season. Pictured is Mata during the afternoon session of try outs on Aug. 1.
