Fort Stockton ISD approves exception for developmental leave

In order to lend a helping hand to one of their own, the Fort Stockton Independent School District approved developmental leave for one of their teachers who has a daughter battling cancer.

Assistant Band Director Lindsey Kilgore, who has been working at Fort Stockton ISD for over five years, received developmental leave approval from the district at their regular board meeting on June 30.

The approval will result in one semester of full pay (fall 2022).

Sul Ross: New Museum of the Big Bend to hold beam signing

The Museum of the Big Bend will commemorate a milestone in the construction of its new building with a “Sign the Beam” ceremony on Wednesday, July 13, at 10 a.m. The public is invited to attend.

The new complex, scheduled for completion in early 2023, will double the space of the museum and will include a temporary exhibit gallery, a rotating Tom Lea gallery, additional collection storage and an inviting interior event space with a connecting outdoor patio that highlights the panoramic view of the western mountains.

Braxton Kole Hernandez, of Fort Worth at 3:05 p.m., officers from the Department of Public Safety apprehended Hernandez and he was charged with five counts of smuggling of persons and one count of smuggling of persons under the age of 18. Hernandez received bonds totaling $60,000 and is still in jail.

Legal review underway regarding land purchase

A correction of meeting minutes at the June 30 Fort Stockton ISD School Board meeting provided additional insight into the legality of a land purchase by district a year ago. And a legal review of the land purchase in the near future will soon bring finality to the matter.

Capital Highlights: Three arrested in deaths of 53 migrants

Three people were arrested last week by federal authorities in connection with a human smuggling incident that left 53 migrants dead. The migrants were discovered inside a tractor-trailer on San Antonio’s Southwest Side, according to the San Antonio Express-News.

PCMH facing $1 million-plus budget deficit

An advance of $1.2 million from their yearly operating budget has Pecos County Memorial Hospital seeking means to reduce their operating expense significantly in the near future. The Pecos County Commissioners approved the advancement of the money from hospital’s yearly operating subsidy at their regular meetings this past month.

Fort Stockton ISD to spend $325,000 on SROs

Student safety in Fort Stockton was at the forefront of the district’s school board meeting on June 30 and after much discussion between all trustees and law enforcement in attendance, Fort Stockton ISD decided to make a significant investment to further protect their students.

The Fort Stockton Independent School District will enter the 2022-2023 school year with five school resource officers – one at each campus with students – via a unanimous approval by the FSISD School Board.

The Fort Stockton Independent School District will have five school resource officers for the 2022-2023 school year following a decision made at the June 30 school board meeting. The City of Fort Stockton and Police Chief Robert Lujan were able to lend the five officers to the school district while still maintaining officers for their patrol duties.

Appropriations bill includes $5.48 million request for communications upgrade along border

Congressman Tony Gonzales (TX-23) successfully included $5,484,000 for a multi-county radio infrastructure upgrade in the first draft of the FY23 Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations bill.

If secured, funding for this project will modernize the trunking radio system used by multiple law enforcement and first responder agencies in a nine-county region along the border.

The nine counties are Uvalde, Dimmit, Edwards, Kinney, La Salle, Maverick, Real, Val Verde, and Zavala.
