Prowlers secure key district volleyball win
The Fort Stockton Prowlers volleyball squad was singing “Sweet Home Fort Stockton,” Saturday afternoon. After a long stretch of district road matches, the Prowlers were back in the friendly confines of the Bill and Virginia Williams Special Events Center and took down Andrews 25-17, 24-26, 25-19, 26-24 to move to 2-3 in district play.
The teams battled to a 7-7 tie in the first set before the Prowlers were able to pull away for the 25-17 win. Game two was just as intense with neither team able to gain more than a one-point advantage until the Mustangs eased out to a 24-21 lead and were on the brink of victory before Fort Stockton rallied to tie it at 24.
Andrews regained the serve and pulled away for the win.
The Prowlers started strong in game three, jumping off to a 17-6 lead and surviving an Andrews rally to secure the win.
Game four was more of the same as the Prowlers opened the set with an 8-4 lead and maintained a 12-7 advantage before the Mustangs pulled back in it with an 8-3 run to tie the game at 15. The game would be tied four times before Andrews eased to a 23-21 lead, and held game point at 24-23 before the Prowlers fought back to win the set and the match.
Eliana Mata led Fort Stockton with 22 assists, 21 digs, eight kills and three aces; Aryanna Gonzalez added 17 digs, two aces and an assist; Alyssa Rangel recorded 15 assists, 11 digs and an 1 ace; Ivanna Ortiz 11 digs, six aces, two kills and an assist; Amaya Urias nine kills, four digs and a block; Sophia Hernandez eight kills, three digs and one block, and Mia Garcia seven kills, four digs and a block.
With the win Fort Stockton is tied with Greenwood for fourth place in the 4A District 3. Next up for Prowlers is a home bout with Greenwood at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11. The contest marks the start of the second round of district games.
JV wins in three
In three hard fought sets, the junior varsity Prowlers defeated Andrews 25-27, 25-22, 25-21.
“The setters ran our offense and that in turn led to a successful run to victory,” coach Sera Ramirez said.
Adamari Renteria recorded 16 assists, nine digs and one ace; Aubrie Salgado added 14 assists and six digs; Priscilla Trevino led the offensive charge with 11 kills, 11 digs and one ace, and Abriel Villarreal rounded out the offensive charge with seven kills and one ace.
The freshman Prowlers fell 25-16, 25-20 to the Lady Mustangs.
