Fort Stockton Junior Ali Jackson began the season golden and captured four top-two finishes at the season-opening Comanche Relays on Feb. 25, leading the Prowlers to a fifth-place finish.

Jackson, who won districts in three events and the area meet in 800-meter run a season ago, took first in the first in the 800 and 400 at the Comanche Relays. Jackson also won silver in the 200.

“They were able to garner a lot of medals, but more importantly they were able to compete against real competition,” Prowlers coach Otis Chunn said.

The junior varsity Prowlers placed fourth as a team.

Addison Castro placed second and third in the hurdle events while teammate Marlayna Salmon took home two silvers in the 800 and 1,600.

“The outstanding performer of the day was Ella Tierney, who showed what competition is all about,” Chunn added. “She worked hard for a solid three weeks and her hard work paid big dividends for her team. She placed third in the 3200 and fifth in the 800. She has not quit and better things are on the horizon.”

Buena Vista’s Lady Longhorns had several athletes compete, as well.

Gabriella Sanchez was third in the junior varsity 3,200 in 13:24.83, Ireland Sanchez placed eighth, and Genova Sanchez took 13th.

The Lady Longhorns finished eighth in the varsity 400 relay with Kaylin Corona, Kiara Corona, Kiele Sickler and Hailey Torres finishing in 59.19 seconds.

Gabriella Sanchez was eighth in the varsity 800 meters, Dayanna Mandujano 20th and Crystal Branham 22nd.

Sickler placed 16th in the varsity 100 meters and Torres 18th, while Miliana Mandujano was seventh in the varsity 400 and Dayanna Mandujano 15th.

Kiara Corona was seventh in the varsity 200 meters, Bailey Torres was 12th, Sickler 18th, Genova Sanchez 24th and Serina Jones 25th.

Gabriela Sanchez was silver medalist in the varsity 1600 meters with a time of 6:15.81 and was second to Alpine’s Hope Dominguez in 6:06.87, Ireland Sanchez was eighth. The varsity 1,600 relay team of Genova Sanchez, Kaylin Corona, Kiara Corona and Miliana Mandujano finished ninth.

In field events, Buena Vista’s Crystal Branham was fourth in varsity pole vault, Clarissa Martinez was fifth in the shot put and Ericka Balderaz 15th, Martínez seventh in the discus, Eliyana Rangel 10th and Balderaz 18th.

Kiele Sickler had Buena Vista’s only gold medal of the day, winning the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, and took ninth place in the long jump. Serina Jones was 10th in the long jump.
