Prowlers mark beginning of Daggett era with pair of scrimmage wins
A new era has begun for the Fort Stockton Prowlers basketball program.
With coach Lea Daggett leading the girls for his first season at the helm, the Prowlers opened the pre-season with a pair of wins at the Midland Classical on Oct. 29.
The junior varsity Prowlers got 10 points from Karissa Salmon in a 53-25 win that featured a ninepoint from Jocelynn Arcides, seven points from Thiara Wislar, six from Victoria Maldonado and Kimbree Norman added five points.
“Today was great for our kids,” Daggett said. “We were able to get out here and see where we are as far as our skill level is concerned.”
The varsity Prowlers – many of whom just completed volleyball – won 48-44.
“Our kids just got out of volleyball, so we are working on getting back into basketball shape,” Daggett said. “Overall, I’m very pleased with the result of our scrimmages. Hopefully we can use this momentum to keep getting better throughout the season.”
Using a diverse offense, according to the coach, Keanna Torres led Fort Stockton with nine points and Eliana Mata scored eight.
Brianna Diaz, Mia Garcia, Yvette Lopez, and Priscilla Trevino finished with six points apiece.
Prowler basketball wraps up pre-season with wins over Crane, Reagan County
Reagan County and Crane were no match for Fort Stockton’s basketball teams on Oct. 31 in the Prowlers’ final pre-season games before the regular season tips off Saturday, Nov. 5. The junior varsity won both of their games in dominating fashion. The JV played each of their opponents for 15 minutes and the varsity played 30 minutes each.
“It’s great to come out and play someone other than yourself,” coach Sera Ramirez said. “This year we are fortunate to have a big squad to run a fast tempo game. We also have a great group of returners with a small core of freshmen.”
The varsity girls also dominated in their sweep.
“We are working through getting my style of basketball implemented into our program, so we are probably going to hit some snags,” said coach Lea Daggett. “Overall, these girls are buying into what I’m teaching them and we have continued to get better each day. I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do this season, this is only the beginning.”
The Prowlers will visit Kermit on Saturday to open the regular season with the freshmen tipping off at 10 a.m., JV at 11 a.m. and varsity at 12:30 p.m.
