Prowlers end 5-year district drought in convincing fashion
The streak is over and a new chapter is on the horizon for the Fort Stockton volleyball program.
The Prowlers put an end to their five-year losing skid against district opponents on Oct. 5 against Andrews at home in their fourth district match of the season.
“It feels amazing. I want to cry,” said Fort Stockton senior Alyana Dominguez of her first career district win as a Prowler. “We just had the connection that we needed to have the whole entire season tonight. We finally clicked.”
Fort Stockton rallied from a 20-23 deficit in set one and fought off three match points to win the set 28-26. Brianna Flores tallied two kills and Eliana Mata put down another to finish out set one for the Prowlers.
After losing set two 25-21, the Prowlers won set three 25-16 and closed out the match with a dominant victory in set four.
Fort Stockton head coach Gabrielle Harral said she knew her team had the talent and work ethic to compete in their district, it was just a matter of putting it all together on the floor from a mental and physical standpoint.
“These girls are talented. I know they have the skill to compete,” Harral said. “I told them they just need to believe in themselves. That’s what they were lacking. They’ve been down for so long that they didn’t believe they can do it. But now they know they can do it,” Harral said with a smile.
Fort Stockton’s head coach noted that after a thrilling set one victory, her team briefly reverted to their old ways in set two of not speaking to one another. The Prowlers quickly remedied that with consistent communication in set three.
“They stopped talking to one another and I told them once you talk to each other you make each other aware of who’s where, who’s going to get the ball,” Harral said. “We’ve been working on team bonding, team chemistry and I think they found it tonight.”
Fort Stockton will host Pecos on Friday for their next district match starting at 4 p.m.
Fort Stockton now holds a 1-3 record against district competition and 20-11 overall.
Prowlers swept by No. 22 Greenwood
Fort Stockton traveled to Greenwood on Oct. 2 and were swept by the No. 22 ranked team in Class 4A according to the Texas Girls Coaches Association volleyball poll that was released on Oct. 4.
Greenwood improved their record to 28-6 with a 25-18, 25-12, 25-16 win.
