Panther track and field: Hodges, 800 relay win area titles

Six Panthers punched their ticket to the regional track meet and Fort Stockton finished in third place as a team on Thursday at the 4A District 3-4 Area Track & Field Championships at West Texas A&M University in Canyon.

Zane Hodges added another individual area title to his resume after claiming gold in the 110 hurdles a season ago.

The senior won the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 37.86 seconds. Hodges also qualified for next week’s regional meet in the 110 hurdles, triple jump, and as a part of the 1,600 relay team.

Hodges placed third in both the 110 hurdles (15.17) and the triple jump (44-8).

Fort Stockton’s 800 relay team (Eduardo Hernandez, Aryan Hernandez, Isaiah Garcia, Marco Garcia) won the event via a season-best time (1:28.19). The same group will compete in the 400 relay at regionals after they finished in third place with a season-best time of 42.78.

The Panthers’ district champion 1,600 relay team (Aryan Hernandez, Marco Garcia, Chrisitan Soto, Hodges) took third place with a time of 3:22.44. The time was .96 seconds slower than their season-best time at districts.

Isaiah Garcia and Eduardo Hernandez join Hodges as individual regional qualifiers. Isaiah clocked a 11.35 100-meter dash time and placed third with the mark.

Eduardo finished in the last reginal-qualifying spot in the 200-meter dash, placing fourth in a time of 22.79.

Aryan Hernandez took fifth in both the triple jump (42-10) and long jump (20-10).

Cruz Rojas placed fifth in the discus with a personal-best throw of 136 feet 11 inches and took sixth in the shot put (45-8 1/2).

Fort Stockton finished the competition with 83 team points, trailing Canyon, and Canyon Randall.

Panther qualifiers will compete at the 4A Region 1 meet in Lubbock, April 28-29, at Plains Capital Park/Lowrey Field.
