A season for the record books concluded its final chapter on April 1 for the Fort Stockton Middle School Blue Wave swim team at the West Texas Middle School Championships.

In appropriate fashion, another record fell and the accomplishment vaulted the Prowlers season to the best in school history according to head coach Lily Morales Forst.

Seventh grader Sofia Garcia set the 200-yard freestyle record on Saturday, marking her second individual record and third overall in 2023.

“The highlight of the swim meet was Sofia Garcia becoming the first in middle school history to swim the 200-yard Freestyle. This race is like running the mile in fast fashion but obviously swimming and using all of your muscles to do so,” Forst explained. “Four records were broken this year, more than any previous year.”

Garcia previously set the record in the 50 backstroke and was a part of the record-setting 200 free relay team (Carla Vazquez, Dustee Dale, Alexis Rodriguez, Garcia).

Vazquez finished the season with two records on her resume as she clocked the fast 100 individual medley in the middle school’s history.

“Congratulations to all the swimmers who have had the courage to try something new, learn, and excel at it,” Forst added.
