Harlan Jack Lambert
It is with profound sadness that the family of Harlan Jack Lambert announces his peaceful passing on August 8, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his loved ones.
Born on August 25, 1936, in San Angelo, Texas, Harlan was a lifelong Texan, rooted in the values and community spirit of his West Texas heritage. He graduated from Lakeview High School and furthered his education at San Angelo Junior College, Texas Tech University, and Southern Methodist University. Harlan proudly served in the Naval Reserves from 1956 to 1962.
On October 7, 1961, he married the love of his life, Joyce Barker. Together, they built a life marked by dedication to family, community, and career. In 1968, Harlan embarked on a distinguished banking career, beginning as Assistant Vice President with Plains National Bank in Lubbock, TX. His leadership and commitment led him to Fort Stockton, TX, where he served as Executive Vice President of Pecos County State Bank in 1976. Harlan was elected President of the bank in 1979, and in 1993, he ascended to Chairman of the Board. He retired as President in 2004 but continued to serve as Chairman until his passing, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to the institution and community he cherished.
Harlan’s impact extended far beyond his professional achievements. He was deeply involved in his community, serving in various roles, including President of the Fort Stockton Development Corporation, Chairman of the Fort Stockton United Way, and member of the Fort Stockton Planning and Zoning Board, among others. In 1984, he was honored as an outstanding ambassador by the Fort Stockton Chamber of Commerce. Harlan was also the driving force behind the renowned Par Tee Golf Tournament and the beloved “Bankers Buggy” trip, traditions that spanned over 40 years. His passion for golf was evident in his role as President of the Fort Stockton Golf Association, where he played a pivotal role in expanding the golf course from nine to eighteen holes in 1981.
A man of deep faith, Harlan served God through his lifelong attendance and service to the First Christian Church.
Those who knew Harlan will remember him as a man of few words and a somber countenance, yet his reserved demeanor belied the deep respect and affection he earned from colleagues, customers, and friends. He took immense pride in his banking career and the formation of Pecos County Bancshares. Even in retirement, Harlan continued to contribute, attending his final board meeting just last month.
Harlan is preceded in death by his parents, Sam Bruce and Lethia McGilvray Lambert. He is survived by his devoted wife, Joyce, and their two daughters, Holly Waldrip (Kerry) and Tracy Horak (Allen); his sister, Glenda Carper (Don); ten grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service celebrating Harlan’s life will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at 1:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church in Fort Stockton, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the West Texas Boys Ranch.
