Jose “Joe” P. Martinez, Jr., left us to rest in peace on June 17, 2021. He was born on March 18, 1945, in Fort Stockton, Texas, to Jose and Maria Martinez.

Joe graduated from Fort Stockton High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, and served in Vietnam, where he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. He then worked for the Texas proving grounds Bridgestone/Firestone test track, and was nicknamed “The Flying Jalapeno.”

Ralph M. Zamarippa, Jr., of San Angelo, Texas, passed away on June 12, 2021.

He was born on Jan. 23, 1937, in San Angelo to Rafael M. Zamarippa and Jesusita “Jessie” Losoya Zamarippa.

Ralph attended Lake View High School, and graduated with the class of 1955. He later went on to obtain a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Education from Sul Ross State University.

Fort Stockton tennis coach Victor Garcia hosted a tennis camp at the FSHS tennis courts on June 21 for fourth through eighth grade students. The camp started on Monday and will finish on Thursday, June 24.

Hiring of new teachers, resignations on Monday's FSISD special meeting agenda

The School Board for the Fort Stockton ISD will hold a special meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday, June 21 at the school’s administration building at 101 W. Division.

Among the agenda items is giving the superintendent the final hiring authority for contract employees. Currently the superintendent only has the hiring authority for non-contract school employees.
