The Fort Stockton City Council convened for a special meeting on Wednesday November 20, with discussions focusing on administrative grants, police department upgrades, and personnel policies. Mayor Paul Casias opened the meeting, called to order following the declaration of a quorum, began with an invocation, led by Councilman Darren Hodges, and pledges of allegiance to the U.S.

Literacy Coalition Partners with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Families across the Permian Basin are set to receive an invaluable gift: free books for children from birth to age five, thanks to a new partnership between the Literacy Coalition of the Permian Basin and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. This initiative seeks to empower young readers, address regional literacy challenges, and foster a lifelong love of books.

Paralleling US Highway 90 to the west from Valentine is the Sierra Vieja range. A barrier between the Rio Grande and the Davis Mountains, this range is pierced by a pass west of Valentine. This location has a varied and unique history. It was the site of the last engagement between the Apache and the U.S. Army, where the military was also primarily represented by a group of Native Americans. It was also the location of isolated army post constructed to protect the border from incursions during the “border troubles” of the early 20th Century.

GARDENER’S MAILBAG Dear Neil, A squirrel must have planted a bur oak acorn in one of our pots last year because we were blessed with a seedling this spring. It grew well (27 inches tall), although it was attacked by a fungus this fall.
