Members participate in Texas 4-H Roundup

Pecos County 4-H members participated at the 75th Texas 4-H Roundup in College Station June 8-10. Texas 4-H Roundup, the pinnacle event for all of Texas 4-H, welcomed around 1,300 youth to compete in around 50 diverse competitions. The contests included both qualifying events and invitational events.

Youth vaccinations surpass 100

The number of individuals who have received at least one shot of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine between the ages of 12-15 has now surpassed 100 in Pecos County. A total of 47 people in that age range were signed up to get the shot at the Pecos County Memorial Hospital Specialty Clinic on June 16.

Texas Hornshell critical habitat proposed

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced the proposed critical habitat for the endangered Texas hornshell, a freshwater mussel found in Texas and New Mexico. The Texas hornshell was listed as endangered on Feb. 9, 2018.

Midland College back to normal operations

Midland College announced on June 14 that the fall 2021 schedule of classes will include many faceto-face classes for the first time since the COVID pandemic started 18 months prior. In addition, students will also have the opportunity to choose hybrid (combination of face-to-face and online), online and virtual formats.

USDA sending out disaster relief payments

Body
More than $1 billion in payments will be released over the next several weeks starting June 15 for agricultural producers with approved applications for the Quality Loss Adjustment Program, and for producers who have already received payments through the Wildfire and Hurricane Indemnity Program Plus. These programs provide disaster assistance to producers who suffered losses to 2018 and 2019 natural disasters.

Pool Hall Restoration

The Comanche Pool Hall is currently receiving renovations, which is being done by Sandro Canovas and his crew. The adobe building will be receiving new bricks, which started to be built this week. Canovas stated the brick are made from an array of materials including cactus juice and manure. See story in next week’s paper. Photo by Jeremy Gonzalez.

Julissa Talavera Duarte, left, was awarded $60,550 dollars in scholarships during the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce scholarship ceremony on June 9 at the Fort Stockton Community Theatre. A total of $50,000 came from the James I Trott Scholarship. Talavera Duarte plans to attend Angelo State University in the fall and major in English. Her goal is to become a teacher.
