Capital Highlights: House pushes armed officer at all schools

Under legislation prioritized by House Speaker Dade Phelan, every Texas school would have an armed police officer, and aspiring teachers would receive extra support.

The Dallas Morning News reported the bill would also provide $15,000 in annual funding for safety measures for each school in the state. Another bill would increase the annual allotment per student for safety measures from $10 to $100.

2023 Comanche Springs Rodeo to be more fan friendly

It’s hard to improve on an already award-winning rodeo, but the Fort Stockton Chamber of Commerce has done it. 

Fort Stockton’s award-winning Comanche Springs Rodeo is set for next weekend and rodeo fans can expect a much-improved viewing experience. 

The six bucking chutes were relocated last January to the west wall of the Pecos County Coliseum, directly across from the grandstands, so everyone in attendance can get the best view of the action as possible. 

The rodeo takes place March 23-25.

Two vehicle crash occurs on FM 1053 Tuesday morning

A two-vehicle rollover accident on FM 1053, less than a mile north of Fort Stockton, has closed down the road to one lane temporarily as of 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 14.

Senate unveils electric grid reform package

Members of the Senate Business and Commerce Committee were joined by Lt. Governor Dan Patrick at a press conference Thursday to unveil a package of nine bills aimed at strengthening the electric grid, adding more thermal generation, and providing enough energy to supply the state's fast growing population for the future.

County hears update from Lancium

The Pecos County Commissioner’s Court heard an update on the status of the Lancium facility at its Feb. 27 meeting, and discussed amendments to the Chapter 381 Economic Development Agreement between the company and the county. The 110-acre, 325-megawatt campus is located just northwest of Fort Stockton off the Pecos Highway and is billed as a large-scale flexible data center that is home to bitcoin mining hosting, as well as other applications.

Bond projects in the works at Fort Stockton

The Fort Stockton ISD bond funds have been put to use in a rapid manner since the past November and May election. More significant renovations and additions to the district will be occurring in the months ahead.
The Fort Stockton High School football field and track is scheduled to receive a complete makeover before the beginning of fall football camp. The new track will have an added eighth lane and will change from the color red to blue. The football field will have consist of matrix helix tuft, a material a majority of NFL teams have on their fields at stadiums across the country. Courtesy Photo
