Pecos County proclaims AgriLife’s National Volunteer Week April 17-23

An “Entire community can inspire, equip and mobilize people to take action that changes the word.” So says a proclamation from the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office declaring April 1723 as National Volunteer Week in Pecos County. The Pecos County Commissioner’s Court approved the proclamation read by Extension Agent Karan Hefelfinger at the March 27 Commissioner’s Court meeting.

Wing Boss chicken wings offered online from Dickey’s Barbecue

When Toni Espinosa bought Dickey’s Barbecue Pit last year, she had her eyes on expanding offerings at the restaurant. That came true on March 15 when Dickey’s began offering Wing Boss chicken wings exclusively online.

Apache Elementary School hosted the grand opening of their Ben Carson Reading Room on April 6 in Fort Stockton.

The Ben Carson Reading Project, founded by retired, world-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon and New York Times bestselling authors Dr. Ben Carson and his wife, Candy, is an initiative of the Carson Scholars Fund.

The purpose of the Ben Carson Reading Project is to create a literacy-enriched environment for children to become proficient and enthusiastic readers.

McDonald Observatory celebrates 1-year anniversary of dark sky reserve

This week, McDonald Observatory and numerous partners join in celebrating the first anniversary of the Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve.

Covering more than 15,000 square miles in Texas and Mexico, the reserve is the largest dark sky place in the world certified by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA).

This achievement builds on a rich history of efforts to preserve the night skies in the region.

Chamber shows appreciation for volunteers, sponsors of Comanche Springs Rodeo

The 2023 Comanche Springs Rodeo was a huge success, with over 3,000 people attending over three days, cheering on the cowboys and cowgirls as they competed in various events, including bull riding, bronc riding, steer wrestling, and barrel racing.

Johnny Hoyle with the Cadillac Rodeo Company, middle, and Tom Chapman, County Commissioner of Precinct No. 1, second from left, were honored by the Fort Stockton Chamber of Commerce at the Comanche Springs Rodeo on March 25 at the Pecos County Coliseum. Hoyle has been the producer of the rodeo since it began and designed the pens for the shifting of the bucket shoots.
