Senate approves law enforcement grants for rural counties

Body

Counties with fewer than 300,000 residents could receive up to half a million dollars in state grants per year to hire more officers under a bill approved unanimously by the Senate on March 28.

Muenster Senator Drew Springer says that in many rural counties, all law enforcement duties are handled by a handful of sheriff's deputies.

These counties don't have the tax base, he said, to pay for needed public safety services.

It’s salad season!

Body

Springtime means warmer weather, and with warmer weather comes a change in food cravings for many people.

Gone are the cravings for rich, heavy foods, and in its place is the desire for lighter fare.

The one option that comes to mind when we talk about lighter food is salads. Not just those leafy green salads, but all sorts of salads.

Middle school track: A golden day for Panther trio

Body

Fort Stockton’s high school track team has been a dominant force this season following their first area championship campaign in school history in 2022.

Following last week’s Fort Stockton Middle School Comanche Relays, it’s fair to say the high school program has plenty of potential to sustain its success in the years ahead.

Eighth graders Angel Lujan and Kade Castillo won nine of the 10 events they competed in to lead the Panthers to a team title at the Comanche Relays.

Seminole completes sweep of Panthers in nail-biter

Body

Fort Stockton’s bats were back up to par in their rematch with Seminole on March 24 at home.

But four Panther errors, a pair of home steals, and a missed opportunity at the plate in the final inning allowed the Indians to capture a 7-6 win over Fort Stockton to complete the regular season sweep.

Fort Stockton turned a 4-1 deficit into a 6-4 lead during a five-run fourth inning before Seminole’s late rally.

Freshman Gerry Diaz (15) continued his productive freshman campaign on March 24 against Seminole with a team-best two hits. Diaz had a .486 batting average in 45 plate appearances heading into Tuesday’s contest at Monahans. The mark is third-best on the team for players who have at least 20 at bats.
