Dust storm strikes Fort Stockton

A hangar at the Fort Stockton-Pecos County Airport lost part of it’s roofing due to a dust storm that lasted approximately 30 minutes (7:30-8 p.m.) on May 24. The winds at the airport surpassed 60 miles per hour according to Pecos County Emergency Management Coordinator Jessie Dominguez. No one was hurt in the incident and no accidents occurred on roadways Dominguez added. Tuesday’s storm arrived 14 days after a severe thunderstorm that tore part of the recreation center’s roof off. New pizza option opens in Fort Stockton

Local developments are flourishing as Taco Bell and KFC progress to return and Allsup’s accelerates its construction. However, the latest development to open below-the-radar is Hunt Brothers Pizza housed inside Partner’s Stop & Shop in Fort Stockton at 103 W. Hornbeck. Blvd.

City council honors track and field team

The Fort Stockton High School track and field regional qualifiers were commended by the Fort Stockton City Council for their exemplary performance in 2022 at the council’s regular meeting on May 23. Palileo to run for mayor in 2023

Former city councilwoman Pam Palileo officially began her campaign to become Fort Stockton Mayor in 2023 at the city council’s meeting on May 17. Palileo served two terms on city council from May 2018 to May 2022, and now feels it’s the appropriate time to make a run to become mayor considering her good friend and current mayor, Chris Alexander, will not be running for mayor in 2023.
Pam Pepper Palileo was presented an admiration and appreciation plaque by Fort Stockton Mayor Chris Alexander on May 17 at the city’s council special meeting. Alexander stated that the plaque was given to Palileo for her exceptional commitment and distinguished service to the citizens of Fort Stockton during her two terms on the council (May 2018-May 2022). Literacy needs our attention now

Today, the majority of the counties in the Permian Basin rank among the lowest literate and least educated in the U.S. According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, both Texas and New Mexico rank in the bottom 25th percentile in literacy nationally, with several Permian Basin counties ranking near the bottom of state averages.

Let me begin by saying, do not assume you know how I voted on the propositions. I am a retired educator, my children went through the public education system, and my grandchildren are currently in the public education system. I have no “disdain” for public education.

Nine Panthers named to all-district teams

Fort Stockton had a highly successful baseball season this past spring, qualifying for the postseason after finishing fourth in District 2-4A. The Panthers were recognized for their winning ways when the alldistrict teams were announced on Monday as nine of their 11 starters were named to the first or second-team all-district squads.

Harbour, Lambert selected as award winners

Harlan Lambert has been selected as a recipient of the 50th Year Banker Award by the Texas Bankers Foundation, and Jan Harbour received special recog nition for her 65 years in banking. The honors were announced at the Texas Bankers Association’s 137th Annual Convention during a special awards luncheon.
