Big bucks for services provider

The federal government awarded a $530 million migrant services contract to Endeavors, a Texas nonprofit that recently hired a Biden transition team official. Coincidence? The no-bid contract - the second largest ever issued by the Administration for Children and Families, and 12 times bigger than Endeavors’ annual budget - comes on the heels of the nonprofit’s $87 million no-bid arrangement with U.S.

Tennis earns district title

The Fort Stockton Middle School tennis team earned a district title on April 24 on their home court. Paige Boone earned a girl’s singles title as well as Alexander Gomez and Jazlene Tijerina, who placed first in the mixed doubles division. Dylan Jones was the runner-up in the boy’s singles bracket. Alyssa Bernal and the mixed doubles team of Moises Villarreal and Vianey placed third, rounding out a superior showing by the Panthers and Prowlers.

Richard “Bub” Turner

Body

Richard “Bub” Turner passed away in San Angelo, Texas, on Dec. 1, 2020, at the age of 87. Due to COVID restrictions, the family chose to have his memorial at a later date.  

A Memorial Celebration of his life will be on Saturday, May 1, 2021, at 11 a.m. at the East Hill Cemetery in Fort Stockton, Texas.

Gerald Bryant “Jerry” Shugart

Body

Gerald Bryant “Jerry” Shugart died on April 21, 2021, in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, after a lengthy illness. Jerry was born in Eldorado, Texas on Nov. 6, 1946. The Shugart family moved to Fort Stockton, Texas, from Eldorado when Jerry was eight years old. He graduated from Fort Stockton High School in 1965, where he was involved in all journalism activities and tennis.

Statebound: Williams thrives on day 2 of regionals, places in top 2

The third time was a charm for Alex Williams at the regional golf tournament in Lubbock at Shadow Hills Golf Course on April 21-22.

The senior, who previously qualified for regionals his freshman and sophomore year, needed one of his best performances to earn a spot at the state tournament in Kyle on May 17-18 at Plum Creek Golf Course.
