July is National Blueberry Month

Body
Hasn’t this summer been absolutely fabulous? July is a great time for picnics and other family get togethers. It is also a time when we celebrate a number of food festivals. Several that occur in July included National Hot Dog and Sausage month, National Horseradish month, National Baked Beans month, National Ice Cream month, and National Blueberry month. Each week in July we will feature recipes using blueberries. Today we will be offering blueberry cookie recipes, so enjoy!

Browned blueberry plant struggles with moisture stress

Body
Dear Neil: I planted a Southern Bluebelle blueberry in April. In the past two weeks some of the leaves have turned brown. I planted it in a bagged potting mix “designed for shrubs.” I water it weekly for 20 minutes with the yard sprinkler, then once a week with a hose to keep it going. Is it possible that water is standing around the plant’s root system?

40 million people depend on most endangered river

Body
At a June 14 Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee meeting, environmentalists warned that the Colorado River’s reservoir level drop might bring dramatic cuts to water deliveries provided to the seven states dependent on the river. Those states are Colorado, California, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, Arizona, and Nevada.

Summer bike hikes a relic of the past

Body
Sitting in my home office I am greeted by a cool breeze coming through my open window, and the sweet sounds of summer outside. It’s late June, which used to be peak bike-hiking season for kids - but now it’s mostly adults who go on long rides on their expensive high-tech bikes.

I have come to call the sinners

Body
“For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” — Matthew 9:13b (NIV) You have probably heard this quote from Abigail Van Buren, “The church is a hospital for sinners, not a museum for saints.” It’s a good reminder that we are all sinners needing confession, communion, and congregation. We need to be with fellow Christians who will lift us in prayer, and encourage us when we fall short.

Summer isn’t the same without hot dogs

Body
I cannot think of summer, July Fourth, Memorial Day, or Labor Day without thinking of hot dogs. July is National Hot Dog Month. Hot dogs can bring back many childhood memories and special occasions when they were served. Hot dogs are also called frankfurters, franks, weenies, wieners, dogs, and red hots.

A new way to use cast iron

Body

For those who have ever cooked in cast iron, you know nothing beats it. If you are like me, it is your go-to cookware option. If I want to make enchilada sauce, I grab my cast iron skillet. If I want to brown my meat for chile verde or asado, I use my cast iron chicken fryer. If it is pancakes or tortillas, it is my cast iron comal. There just is not any cookware out there that beats it.

Stranger things in my kid’s bedroom

Body
A few days ago, my wife and I joined some friends for a gathering during a few rare hours when we weren’t busy hauling a teenager to some kind of expensive activity or hosting an entire herd of them at our home to ransack our pantry and abuse the plumbing. The highlight of the get-together was watching the final episode of “Stranger Things,” Season 4, Volume 1, on Netflix while snacking, catching up, snacking, reminiscing, snacking, and snacking.

DOJ charges against Facebook should be a warning

Body
Meta Platforms, until October 2021 known as Facebook, is in turmoil. Infamous for its commitment to employing H-1B workers, and simultaneously undermining qualified U.S. tech workers’ careers, the Silicon Valley titan is finally getting its just rewards.
