Pecos County, Terrell County enter into aid agreement

The Pecos County Commissioners Court on Nov. 28 approved a mutual aid agreement between the Pecos County Sheriff’s Department and the Terrell County Sheriff’s Department. Terrell County, which borders Pecos County to the east and Mexico to the south, has had a high increase in illegal immigrants coming through the county.

Capital Highlights: Changes urged in funding community colleges

A report submitted to state leaders ahead of the 88th legislative session’s opening in January urges lawmakers to develop “an innovative new model” to fund community colleges.
The Texas Commission on Community College Finance, established last year by the Legislature and consisting of 12 lawmakers, business leaders and community college leaders, offered three sets of recommendations for supporting the state’s strategic plan for higher education:

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Fort Stockton, and the holiday season truly kicks off this weekend with holiday activities across the city. The Fort Stockton Chamber of Commerce kicked things off Nov. 28 with the Joy Run Silent Auction and Art Show, which runs through Dec. 9, and the annual Christmas parade takes place on Friday, Dec. 2 beginning at 6:30 p.m. along Dickinson Boulevard to Main Street. 

The Joy Run Silent Auction is for a good cause to get everyone in the giving spirit.

Within the next two weeks, the Fort Stockton Chamber of Commerce will host an open house and art show at their facility, located at 1000 E. Railroad Ave in Fort Stockton.

Hospital district election set for Dec. 10

Registered voters in Pecos County, excluding those who reside within the Iraan Hospital District boundaries, will have the opportunity to determine the future of Pecos County Memorial Hospital in an upcoming special election.

Fort Stockton Public Library receives $5k grant

The Literacy Coalition of the Permian Basin awarded the Fort Stockton Public Library with a $5,000 sub-grant on Nov. 21. The funds, which will be available to the library in January, will be used for the Mango Languages Program.

Capital Highlights: Legislators begin filing bills ahead of session

Texas legislators are off to the races, filing more than 850 bills on Monday, the first day of filing season for the 88th session, which begins Jan. 10.

The Austin American-Statesman reported the potential laws, constitutional amendments and propositions address everything from property taxes to border security, access to guns, abortion, education and health care.
