EDC approves solar lighting for Gene Cummings Park

The Fort Stockton Economic Development 4-B Corporation approved the purchase of solar lighting for Gene Cummings Park at its March 16 meeting. The lights could cost up to $65,000. 

“We’re going to install multiple new solar lighting around Gene Cummings Park,” said Fort Stockton Economic Development Director Remie Ramos, adding the lights will be similar to what’s currently at the park. 

The EDC approved the purchase following a public hearing on March 16.

Senate bill could create new research fund for Texas universities

Body

Major state university systems outside of UT and Texas A&M would get millions in new research dollars off of the dividends paid by a new university investment fund contemplated by the Senate Finance Committee on April 3.

In 1876, the Legislature granted 2.1 million square miles in West Texas to the state's two flagship institutions, the University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University.

Fort Stockton City Council renews city secretary contract

In a brief meeting Monday night, the Fort Stockton City Council considered city secretary Marina Cantu’s performance evaluation and pay, among other routine items. After 16 minutes, the council went into executive session to consider Cantu’s performance and, after about 20 minutes, the council reconvened with their decision.

Hospital requests another $900,000

The Pecos County Commissioner’s heard another request for transfer of funds from Pecos County Memorial Hospital on March 27 in order to make end-of-month payroll. The hospital requested $500,000 with an additional $400,000 that had previously been approved but not used earlier in March.

Benedicto Molinar Lujan, of Fort Stockton at 9:01 a.m., officers with the Fort Stockton Police Department apprehended Lujan and charged him with driving while intoxicated second offense. Lujan received a $4,500 bond.

Karaoke night returns to Fort Stockton Community Theatre

Karaoke is back at Fort Stockton Community Theatre on Saturday, April 1, at 7:00 p.m.

The doors will open at 7:00 p.m. at the FMH Meeting Hall (next to The Nelson Street Theatre) at 102 S. Nelson St. Competition will begin at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Admission is $10 per person.

Senate approves law enforcement grants for rural counties

Body

Counties with fewer than 300,000 residents could receive up to half a million dollars in state grants per year to hire more officers under a bill approved unanimously by the Senate on March 28.

Muenster Senator Drew Springer says that in many rural counties, all law enforcement duties are handled by a handful of sheriff's deputies.

These counties don't have the tax base, he said, to pay for needed public safety services.
