Buena Vista cross country and track standout Mariana Sanchez left it all on the track in her final showing in a Longhorns uniform on May 14 at the UIL State Track & Field Championships in Class 1A.

The senior earned a silver medal in the 3,200-meter run and a bronze medal in the 1,600 with significant time improvements in each race.

Sanchez shaved 36 seconds of her 3,200 time from regionals, crossing the finish line of Saturday’s race in a personal-best time of 12 minutes 3.97 seconds. Graford’s Kaylee Bezio and Sanchez were by each other the entire race as they were within a half second of each other until Bezio gained a slight advantage in the final 400 meters of the race.

Bezio, a junior, crossed the finish in 11:59.51 – just over four seconds ahead of Sanchez.

Mariana’s sister, Gaby Sanchez, placed seventh in the 3,200 in a time of 12:57.40 – a nine second improvement from her showing at the Longhorns’ regional meet. The race marked the last time the Sanchez sisters will compete in the same race at the high school level.

Mariana concluded her track career as a Lady Longhorn Saturday evening in the 1,600. The senior finished the race in a personal-best time of 5:36.41 to place third. The time was seven seconds less than her previous season-best mark that she clocked at regionals.

Taytum Goodman of Earth Springlake won the race in 5:20.31 and Sydney Partin of Priddy took second (5:34.04). Mariana finished 14 seconds ahead of Benson’s Lilly Benson, who finished one second ahead of Mariana at regionals.

Senior Cole Brauchi took seventh place in the shot put for the Longhorns with a throw of 43 feet 10 ¾ inches. Brauchi recorded his best throw on his first attempt and ended his career as a two-time state qualifier as a Longhorn.

Iraan’s Torres places in top six at state

Iraan senior Dayanara Torres ended her athletic career with one of her best races as a Bravette. Torres, Iraan’s lone state qualifier, broke the 49-second barrier in the 300-meter hurdles for the second time this season on Saturday during the state track meet.

The senior placed sixth in a time of 48.94 seconds.
