Prowlers claim first district win of season
Dominguez drops 20 in 25-point victory
Hopes of making the postseason are very much alive for the Prowlers after they claimed their first district win of the season on Jan. 21 at Pecos.
A trio of Prowlers – Mia Garcia, Alyana Dominguez, Eliana Mata – scored in double-digits and Sophie Hernandez secured 13 rebounds in the Prowlers 64-39 victory.
Fort Stockton head coach Sherman Chew said his crew came ready to play from the opening tip and never let off the gas in their first district win of the season.
“The girls played with tremendous energy tonight,” he said.
Dominguez topped the 20-point mark for the third time this season, scoring a team-high 20 points.
Mata followed with 14 points and snagged a game-high seven steals.
Garcia scored 10 points –tying her career-high point total.
Keanna Torres finished with six points while Hernandez and Villarreal each tallied two points apiece.
Fort Stockton improved their record to 10-16 with the win and 1-4 in district play. The victory moved them into sole possession of fifth place in the 4A Region 1 District 2 standings.
The Prowlers will need at least two wins in the second round of district play to qualify for the postseason.
After Friday’s games, Seminole sits at the top of the district standings with a 5-0 record in district play. Greenwood is in second at 4-1, Monahans is in third place with a 3-2 record, and Andrews is in fourth with a 2-3 mark.
Fort Stockton will host Monahans on Jan. 25. The Loboes downed the Prowlers 56-35 in their first meeting on Jan. 7.
