Panthers crowned champions of Comanche Relays
For the second consecutive year, the Fort Stockton boys track team earned a team title at the annual Comanche Relays on Feb. 26.
Fort Stockton finished 56 points ahead of runner-up Greenwood and 59 points ahead of third-place finisher Seminole.
Fabian Perez and Zane Hodges led the Panthers with a combined five top-two finishes.
Perez a claimed gold medal at the Greenwood Relays a week prior in the 1,600-meter run and the junior easily maintained his undefeated season in the event, winning the race by 10 seconds in a time of 4 minutes 47.85 seconds.
Earlier in the day, Perez placed first in the 3,200 in a time of 10:01.40. The mark was 17 seconds faster than runner-up William Hall of Crane.
Teammate Juan Vela, who was side by side with Perez for the first 1,200 meters of the race, finished in fourth place.
Hodges took to the track for the first time this season at Saturday’s meet and transition from basketball was seamless as the junior placed first in the 300 hurdles (41.9 seconds) and earned silver medals in the 110 hurdles (16.06), as well the high jump (5-6).
Fort Stockton’s 1,600-meter relay team (Caleb Garcia, Aryan Hernandez, Jesus Hernandez, Marco Garcia) had the highest finish of all Panther relay squads. The unit finished in second in a time of 3:35.79.
Garcia added a second-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 43 feet 9 inches and was a part of the third-place 400 relay team and fourth place 800 relay team.
Garcia paired with Ethan Acosta, Miguel Trejo, and Aryan Hernandez in the 400 relay and 800 relay.
Four-place finishers included Elijah Escajeda (shot put) and Connor Miller (pole vault).
