The Fort Stockton girls basketball team’s defense came to play from the opening tip on Senior Night on Tuesday, Feb. 2 against Andrews.

The only problem – the Prowlers defense couldn’t keep pace with the Mustangs for all four quarters.

Sherman Chew’s squad entered the second quarter down 9-6 and the offensive output for Fort Stockton entered an anemic state from that point forward.

Fort Stockton scored nine points in the following three quarters and lost 34-15.

“The Prowlers played decent defense tonight and were taking lots of offensive shots; not enough were falling in the basket,” Fort Stockton coach Breeann Sturges said.

The 15 points scored by the Prowlers was their season-low by nine points as Fort Stockton had scored 24 twice this season.

Miranda Trevino tallied a game-high 11 points for the Mustangs.

For Fort Stockton, Alyana Dominguez had a team-high in three categories: six points, six rebounds, and two blocks.

Junior Alexia Galindo recorded four points, two rebounds, one steal and one assist. Sophomore Brianna Diaz tallied two points, four rebounds, two steals, and two assists.

Arial Smith, Dominguez, and Eliana Mata each tallied double-digit point totals for the Fort Stockton girls basketball team on Friday in an away contest at Greenwood.

The trio of Prowlers netted 34 of their team’s 41 points, topping their season average point total of 37 points per game.

Despite the feat, Fort Stockton was unable to slow down Greenwood’s offense, particularly in the second and third quarter of Friday’s game. The Prowlers were outscored 43-15 in those two frames in their 67-41 loss.

The contest moved the Prowlers record to 6-17 on the season and 2-6 against district competition.

Smith recorded a team-high 12 points, along with three rebounds and one block.

Dominguez led her team in rebounds (8), assists (3), and blocks (3) while finishing the game with 11 points.

Mata ended the game with 11 points and two assists.

Key stat: Fort Stockton has not given up more than 48 points in any of their six wins and has averaged 45 points in their victories.
