Fort Stockton born boxer Abel Mendoza is a young star on the rise in the sport and could soon be in the big leagues of the boxing world.

Local fans will get the rare and potentially one of the last opportunities to see the undefeated lightweight (34-0) on the regional scene later this month.

The 25-year-old will be featured in the main event of the Midtown Beatdown Professional Boxing event at The Hacienda Event Center in Midland on Sept. 24.

While an opponent has yet to be secured for the bout, Mendoza said he’ll put on a show for the fans and plans to add another finish to his record.

“I want to make a statement that I belong at the top and win impressively by knockout because that’s what counts., make sure to win by KO,” he said.

In the past 12 months, Mendoza has secured four wins – all by way of knockout. The Fort Stockton native has 10 consecutive stoppages dating back to October of 2020.

Mendoza is currently training out of Odessa and San Diego under the guidance of longtime coach Gilbert “Dinamitts” Roybal, who has provided tutelage to Mendoza since he was three fights into his professional career.

Tickets for the event can be purchased by visiting haciendalive.com or by calling 432-563-3737 for more info.

The big scene awaits

Many may wonder how long it’ll be before they Mendoza fighting on TV in the four top organizations of the boxing world – WBA, WBC, IBF and the WBO.

That may not be too far away according to Mendoza, but the undefeated star is adamant about staying independent for the time being before potentially signing with a promotion and/or getting a manager.

“I’m trying to do everything I can to maintain as independent for as long as possible. It looks like I might sign at the end of year with a company. I can't say which one because I'm talking to several but hopefully I don’t have to,” he said. “Hopefully I can be a world champion without a manager. Maybe I don’t have to get a promoter, just have a manager. We’ll see.”
