Iraan falls to Lake View, Wink

From Nov. 20 to Nov. 23 the Iraan girls basketball team won three consecutive games and improved their record to 4-3 in the process.

Since that point, the Bravettes have been defeated in three consecutive contests – two of those games coming in the last nine days against Wink and Lake View.

Iraan hosted Wink on Tuesday, Dec. 8 and the Bravettes were outdone in large part by a pair of Wildcat seniors in Kate Ramirez and Danni Akers.

Ramirez scored a gamehigh 16 points and Akers netted 12 points as the duo nearly combined for more points that the entire Iraan team in their 44-30 victory over the Bravettes.

Despite the double-digit loss, Iraan held a 5-4 lead after one quarter of play. But the script was quickly flipped in the second quarter. Wink (2-4) outscored the Bravettes 17-3 in the second quarter to take a 21-8 lead by halftime.

The Wildcats carried their momentum into the third quarter with a 12-6 advantage in scoring in the third frame.

The Class 1A Bravettes then faced off against Class 4A Lake View on Friday, Dec. 11 in San Angelo.

The Maidens held a 9-2 advantage after the first quarter and a 19-8 advantage by halftime. Iraan tied Lakeview’s scoring output in the final quarter as each team scored 12 points in Lake View’s 43-20 victory against the Bravettes.

Iraan’s record is 4-6 heading into Friday’s away game at Stanton.

GIBSON’S SCORE SEASON-HIGHS IN WIN OVER BRAVES

The Iraan boys basketball ran into their toughest opponent of the season when they met preseason 22nd ranked Class 2A Wink on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at home.

Wink’s Brock Gibson and Kanon Gibson had their best outings of the young season as both scored season-high point totals in the 83-18 victory.

Brock outscored the entire Iraan squad with 24 point and 11 rebound double-double. The 6-foot-3 senior scored 20 of his 24 points in the first half – propelling his team to a 45-15 halftime lead. Brock shot 11-of-14 from the field in the win.

Kanon scored 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting.

Wink shot a dismal 2-of-20 from 3-point range but more than compensated with 34 steals that turned into plethora of points off turnovers. The Wildcats also brought 49 rebounds – 33 on the offensive end.

Iraan was led by Isaiah Smith, who scored a team-best eight points via two 3-pointers and a pair of free throws.

The Iraan boys (0-5) will head to Stanton on Friday, Dec. 18.
