Garcia nearly completes cycle in district rout of Pecos
Freshman Mia Garcia has shown her prowess at the plate all season for the Prowlers.
On Tuesday, Garcia set the bar to greater heights for herself and her teammates.
The first baseman hit her first career grand slam and was a triple away from completing the cycle in the Prowlers 22-6 win over Pecos.
Garcia tallied nine RBIs during Tuesday’s victory – a team-high total in any contest over the last two seasons for Fort Stockton.
Garcia finished with a single and two doubles to go along with her home run.
The victory proved to be a much needed one as Darrian Roberson’s squad improved their district record to 2-3 entering the second cycle of district games beginning on April 1.
Fort Stockton is in fifth place in the district 2-4A standings after Tuesday’s win and the Prowlers will need at least two wins in their final five games to give themselves a chance at the playoffs.
The Prowlers plated 11 runs in the first inning of Tuesday’s game and the Eagles responded with two runs of their own to make it an 11-2 game entering the second inning.
Fort Stockton scratched out five hits in the first inning – including Garcia’s grand slam – to take a commanding lead.
The Prowlers scored four runs in the second and third frames before adding three runs in the fourth.
The contest ended via mercy rule after the top of the fifth inning.
Seven Fort Stockton batters collected the team’s 15 hits on Tuesday. Ivanna Ortiz and Garcia tallied a team-best four hits. Ortiz accumulated the second-highest RBI total with four.
Adree Bueno had three hits and Anaih Montoya added two.
The 22 runs were the most scored by Fort Stockton this season and the fourth time they recorded a double-digit run total.
Freshman Kriselda Porras threw a four-strikeout complete game, allowing eight hits and four walks.
Fort Stockton’s record improved to 10-10 with the win. Up next is an away contest at Monahans on April 1.
