If the Prowlers split their last two games, they’ll be on their way to the big dance.

The Fort Stockton girls basketball program put themselves in a favorable position to end their two-year playoff drought with a 47-31 win on Jan. 27 at Pecos.

Senior Brianna Diaz scored a season-best 15 points, including a careerhigh four 3-pointers, in the contest, earning her Pioneer Athlete of the Week honors.

“I think she was very focused,” Fort Stockton head coach Lea Daggett said of Diaz’s performance. “One of things we’ve been preaching is focus and she figured out how to focus and not let other things distract her.”

The victory moved Fort Stockton’s district win total to three – a mark the Prowlers haven’t been able to reach since the 2019-2020 season.

Daggett’s squad outscored the Lady Eagles in each quarter of Friday’s game, taking a 22-15 lead into the break and having a 25-16 advantage in the final 16 minutes of play.

Senior guard Eliana Mata stuffed the stat sheet as she’s done on a number of occasions this season. Mata tallied 10 rebounds, eight steals, six assists and six points.

Amaya Urias scored seven points and Mia Garcia accumulated six.

Despite beating Pecos by 24 points (45-21) in the first meeting and 16 in the second go-around, Daggett thought his team played a more complete game in their second stanza with the Lady Eagles.

“I think we were more evenly balanced through each quarter this time, where the last time it was nip and tuck,” he said.

Maidens put on 3-point clinic Seminole has been in a class of their own in 4A District 3.

The Maidens won their first seven district games by an average of 50 points and that trend continued in their eighth district contest against the Prowlers on Jan. 30 at the Special Events Center.

Seminole made 15 3-pointers, led by London Shain’s six triples and 26 points, in their 88-26 win over Fort Stockton.

“I think their game plan was to come over here and score all their points from 3-point range,” Daggett said.

The 88 points scored by the Maidens tied for their fourth-highest point total of the season and tied for their second highest in district play, only behind a 107-point outing against Pecos on Jan. 24.

Fort Stockton was led in scoring by Urias (eight points).

Moving forward, Fort Stockton will need one win in their final two games of the regular season to secure a playoff spot.

The Prowlers host Monahans on Friday, Feb. 3 and head to Andrews on Tuesday, Feb. 7.
